Matthew J.X. Doyle | 間紫羽
I live in Los Angeles, where I teach, create moving image work, write, perform music and create multimedia installations.
I have presented my moving image and interdisciplinary work at the Swiss Insitute (NYC), RECESS (PDX), MassArt (BOS), Hammer Museum, FARAGO, Human Resources (LA), and Beton7 (Athens, GR). I’ve presented my research and writing at conferences at Harvard University’s Mahindra Humanities Center, USC’s Department of Slavic Languages, and at the Standard Hotel’s Hard to Read series. Some writing is published in the online magazine Hypocrite Reader.
I received an M.F.A. from UCLA’s Design | Media Arts program with a certificate in Experimental Critical Theory. Mentorship has been a crucial part of my education, which I sought out through working closely with musician Keiji Haino and filmmaker Saul Levine.
I have taught at UCLA and the Public School in Los Angeles, and currently teach at Loyola Marymount University.
I have played improvised music in countless houses, backyards, basements, and public spaces. I regularly perform with my free jazz band the Air Traffic Control Quartet. Our debut album Blue Raspberry is currently available on Sun Ark.
